What is phishing?
Phishing refers to to when someone sends an email that impersonates a real company that leads to a fake website with the intent to steal personal information.
For example, imagine a forgery of the bitFlyer website. The fake website looks exactly like the real one and guides the customer to a login portal to elicit their email address and password. The phisher then uses the data entered to log in to the real website in order to steal the customer’s assets.
Recent fake websites and URLs are very well crafted so that they can not be discerned at a glance.
Steps for customers
You can protect yourself with the following steps.
Please be aware of these points as well.
- Before clicking any URLs, ensure that they lead to https://bitflyer.com/
- Bookmark the official bitFlyer homepage, and use that instead of links from suspicious emails or websites.
- If you receive an email using bitFlyer’s name and gives unusual instructions to log in, do not follow their directions.
- If you have entered your password on a fake website, consider enabling two-factor authentication.
